Donations:
The Cal Sailing Team is able to survive thanks to generous donations from our alumni and friends. Each year we have to pay $4,000 to Treasure Island Sailing Center to store our boats, $7,000 towards the $24,000 we still owe on our boats, $3,000 towards team transportation, and $500 in fees to the PCIYRA. To cover our costs we receive only $1500 a year from the university. To make up the difference we rely on team dues, our Gala fundraising and generous donations. We charge $220 a semester in dues and work to keep this as low as possible in order to keep sailing open to anyone who is enthusiastic and dedicated. Additionally, we raised almost $4,000 thanks to your support in our Gala last spring. However, this still leaves us with an enormous shortfall.
We are currently working to make the team stronger and more competitive. We are investigating several long term goals including getting a coach and competing nationally. In order to achieve these goals, we are trying to improve the financial foundation of the team in the next several years.
Adopt a Sail:
Right now, we are working on overhauling our boats. This year we have already received a generous donation from Hansen Rigging to replace all of our lines and sheets. We have also performed major maintenance on our boats including gel coating cracks and replacing worn out parts. Our chief short term goal is to buy six new sets of racing sails. Our current racing sails are five years old and are wearing out. Buying a new set of racing sails will not only allow us to sail faster in regattas, but will allow us to replace our very worn out practice sails. Replacing our practice sails will enables us to practice using sails which have the same feel as our race sails.
We are launching the “adopt a sail” program in which donors can adopt a jib for $250, a main for $500 or a complete set for $750. For their generous contribution, donors will be recognized on the team website, in the team newsletter, as well as receive updates on how the sailors using their sails have done in recent regattas.
