General Info:
The Cal Sailing Team is a student-run competitive team from the University of California, Berkeley. The Team competes in the PCCSC (Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference) which sanctions collegiate racing on the Pacific Coast and is part of the larger ICSA (Intercollegiate Sailing Association). We compete against schools such as Stanford, USC, University of Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara and California Maritime Academy.
Practices are held three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons at our sailing facility at Treasure Island. Only fifteen minutes from campus by car, TI provides some of the best sailing on the west coast, not to mention some beautiful views of both the San Francisco and Oakland skylines. An average day produces 12-18 knots of sea breeze and flat water due to the sheltering effect of the island.
We send sailors to regattas almost every weekend of the academic year. Most of the events we attend are held either on the San Francisco Bay or in the Los Angeles area. In the fall often more than fifteen teams will attend many regattas and the season culminates in the North/South Pacific Coast Championship Intersectional where more than 20 teams are represented by over 60 boats in both Varsity and JV divisions. The spring is characterized by intense competition to qualify for the PCCSC's berths for the Women's, Team Racing and Dinghy National Championships held in early June. During the spring season the team will travel to regattas throughout the country called intersectionals where national rankings are determined. Also, the team competes against Stanford and others for the overall win in the North Series and the coveted Bell Trophy, which Cal has possessed for several consecutive years in the past.
How to Join:
The Cal Sailing Team is open to all Cal students. The team is a competitive racing team, not a learn to sail class. People without prior experience are still welcome to join provided that they can come to at least two practices a week and are interested in learning the racing aspects of sailing. If you are interested in learn to sail classes you should check out Cal Adventures programs or the Cal Sailing Club. Competitions are open only to undergraduates, and while we prefer that team members be eligible for competition, it is possible to practice with the team if you are a grad student. We suggest that if you are a grad student you try the Cal Sailing Club for recreational sailing or the Vanguard 15 fleet for racing.
Dues are $200 a semester. The money goes mostly towards maintaining our fleet of boats and some goes towards travel expenses. You must also be a member of the RSF to join the team. This costs $10/semester but gives you acess to the gyms and pools on campus. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at TISC and go from 2:30 until dark. We also have weekly meetings in the RSF conference room on Tuesdays at 7pm which usually last about an hour. If you have financial concerns that prevent you from paying the dues but are still interested in joining the team, please don’t hesitate to talk to a team captain because we are flexible and can possibly work something out.
High school students wishing to sail for the University of California at Berkeley should contact a Cal representative during the fall of their senior year. We highly recommend that prospective students come up and see the beautiful Berkeley campus, visit Telegraph Avenue and come for a practice with the team during September or October. Students should apply at the normal deadline and let us know that you have applied soon thereafter. The team can choose a few students each year to write letters of reccomendation for. In addition to a letter, the Cal team also has some excellent advice on how to maximize your chances of being admitted to Berkeley and suggestions of other places for help with your application.
